Questions

Asked, and answered plainly.

No perfume exists yet. These are the things people write in to ask, and the answers as they stand today. If something here changes, we will change it here.

What is United Olfactories?

United Olfactories is a members’ perfume union. Real, independent perfumers create original scents, funded upfront by the people who want them, and made at production cost with the perfumer’s name on the front of every bottle.

How does it work?

The union brings the direction and the people who want it. A perfumer brings the art, with a free hand in how the scent is made, and their name goes on the bottle. Each scent is made at cost: the perfumer, the materials, the glass, the lab and the postage, with no markup on top.

Does United Olfactories exist yet?

Not yet. Right now it is an idea and a founding waitlist. When five hundred members have gathered, the first scent can begin.

How is it different from a normal perfume brand?

There is no brand painted over the maker and no marketing markup. The perfumer is credited by name and paid on every bottle, and the price is the true cost of making it, and nothing more.

What does it cost to join?

Nothing, and there is nothing to pay now. Leaving your name puts you on the founding waitlist. Nothing is for sale yet, because nothing has been made yet.

What happens after I leave my name?

You are counted, and you are early, and we write to you when the first scent is ready. That is all. No campaign, no drip of mail, no countdown.

Why five hundred?

Five hundred is roughly the number it takes to pay a perfumer properly and still make a real production run at cost. Below that the numbers stop working. It is a threshold, not a sales target.

Who chooses what gets made?

The direction is chosen together, by the members and the perfumer. The perfumer keeps a free hand in how the scent is actually made. How many we make is up to us as well, and there is no calendar.

I am a perfumer. How do I take part?

Write to hello@unitedolfactories.com. This is being built for perfumers as much as for the people who wear the work. Your name goes on the front, you are paid on every bottle, and the work stays yours.

Will the formulas be published?

We share the accords, the notes and the cost. The exact recipe stays the maker’s, unless they choose to give it away. That rule is written into the Code of Ethics.
